Christmas is a season rich with traditions, which vary widely around the world. A few years ago, I asked some of our international students about the Christmas traditions in their home countries. I learned about Krampus, a figure in parts of Europe described as an “evil” Father Christmas, who gives children lumps of coal instead of presents. I also discovered that eating turkey on Christmas Day is far from universal - with some families gathering to enjoy goat, pike, or a vast array of festive dishes.
These conversations reminded me how beautifully diverse our celebrations can be. Yet, despite these differences, the heart of the Christmas message remains the same everywhere. The evangelical theologian J.I. Packer put it powerfully:
“The Christmas message is that there is hope for a ruined humanity - hope for pardon, hope of peace with God, hope of glory - because at the Father’s will Jesus Christ became poor and was born in a stable so that thirty years later he might hang on a cross.”
Christmas is a time to remember that no matter how uncertain or complex life may feel, we are not alone. It is a season of light, of reconnecting - with one another, with God, and with the enduring hope that Jesus brought into the world.
As we break for Christmas, my prayer for you is simple: may your home be filled with joy, your heart with peace, and your spirit with hope. And may the love that came down for all of us at Christmas guide and sustain you in the year ahead.

As we celebrate the end of a fantastic Michaelmas Term, we`re thrilled to share a highlight from our EAL program.
This term, a group of our incredible international students, here for just one term, worked tirelessly to prepare for their Cambridge B2 and C1 English exams.
Last week, they headed off bright and early to take these challenging tests. Achieving an internationally recognised English qualification is no small feat, especially in such a short time!
We’re so proud of their dedication and hard work. Results are out in January—fingers crossed for great news! 🤞

🎭 Our 4th Form drama students had an incredible opportunity to experience a physical theatre workshop with the world-renowned company, Frantic Assembly! 💥
This high-energy workshop introduced the Frantic Assembly Method, boosting our students` physical confidence and performance skills. They explored dynamic movement and devised collaborative, multi-disciplined performances, pushing their creative boundaries in a fun and supportive environment.

This weekend, we came together for two wonderful events: the Christmas Concert, where our talented musicians and singers spread joy through beautiful performances, and the Festival of Lessons and Carols, a cherished tradition of heartfelt readings, hymns, and reflection.

A beautiful message James. I miss the inspirational chapel when in solitude I could sit in quiet contemplation or when it was full of pupils and staff together in praise.
