Pupils from the 11 schools in the EKST partnership (East Kent Schools Together) were invited to take part in the Big Design Challenge, hosted by St Lawrence College. The pupils were challenged to develop empathy with their product users, all the better to boost their creativity and to develop really innovative and exciting ideas.
Designing was overseen by special guest Dr Zoe Laughlin, with the support of CCCU delegates (Canterbury Christ Church University) and teachers from Spires Academy, Herne Bay High School, St Edmunds School and of course St Lawrence.
The winning design was for an adaptable storage unit designed to help its user port belongings within the home. Designers had considered feasibility and had communicated an exciting and well-developed concept to win the top spot, although the competition was fierce. The feedback from the day was excellent from everyone involved and we would all like to say a huge thank you to Zoe for taking time and making considerable effort to support the venture.
It was great to be collaborating in person again and Dr Laughlin herself said: “A top notch day. Thanks for having me and well done one and all who participated. Inspiring stuff.”
