St Lawrence College recently hosted the Big Design Challenge, welcoming 33 Year 9 students from schools within the East Kent Schools Together (EKST) partnership. The event brought aspiring innovators together to design cutting-edge solutions for “the airport of the future.” The aim was to incorporate disruptive technologies that enhance efficiency, security, and sustainability. This challenge aligns with EKST’s mission to broaden students’ horizons and foster collaborative, creative thinking.
Under the expert guidance of Ollie Saunderson from AIRDAT, a Canterbury-based airport systems consultancy, students worked on bold, innovative ideas. AIRDAT’s involvement brought industry insights and inspired participants to think about real-world applications for their designs.
The winning concept—a magnetic take-off system—impressed judges with its focus on fuel efficiency and environmental impact. The team also considered practical factors such as feasibility, cost, and portability, delivering a thoroughly researched and compelling proposal. The competition was intense, but feedback highlighted the professionalism and creativity of all teams.
Held in the state-of-the-art Design and Technology Department at St Lawrence College, the event provided participants with access to advanced tools and resources. Students also enjoyed networking over lunch, hosted in the college’s historic dining hall, fostering camaraderie across the EKST network.
The day not only enhanced technical skills but also boosted confidence and teamwork, embodying the core goals of EKST partnerships: raising aspirations and enriching student experiences.
