St Lawrence College is thrilled to celebrate the exceptional artistic achievements of its students at the prestigious John Downton Awards, an annual event dedicated to showcasing the creativity and talent of young artists across Kent.
Held on Tuesday, November 19th, at County Hall in Maidstone, the awards ceremony brought together students, families, and educators in a celebration of artistic expression and the enduring legacy of John Downton—a renowned Kent artist, poet, and philosopher.
This year, ten of St Lawrence College’s most talented students were shortlisted for prizes and featured in the exhibition, which showcased outstanding artwork by students aged 11 to 18. The shortlisted students—Dilyara, Ileri, Linda, Christine, Adresa, Amber, Lara, Ellie, Bimi, and Arabella—proudly represented the school with their exceptional creativity and dedication.
Among the highlights of the evening were the accolades awarded to Linda Golling and Ileri Umole, who each received prizes for their remarkable photographic work. Their pieces not only demonstrated technical mastery and artistic vision but also left a lasting impression on the judges, standing out in an exhibition brimming with talent.
Linda and Ileri also had the unique opportunity to address the audience, sharing insights into their creative processes and the inspirations behind their work. Speaking confidently to a large gathering, they showcased not only their artistic talent but also their poise and passion for the arts—a true testament to their dedication and maturity.
The evening was a celebration of more than individual success; it highlighted the importance of fostering creative careers and nurturing young talent. The exceptional standard of the exhibition reflected the vibrant artistic culture thriving among Kent’s youth.
St Lawrence College is immensely proud of all the students who participated in the John Downton Awards. Their achievements underscore the school’s commitment to supporting the arts and inspiring the next generation of creative thinkers. Events like these remind us of the profound impact of art in education and the vital role it plays in shaping confident, expressive, and innovative individuals.
