From 23rd June to 28th June, seventy-two pupils from Year 9 to Year 12 of St Lawrence College took part in the annual Combined Cadet Force (CCF) Summer Camp held at St Martin Plain Camp near Folkestone. The camp, organised by Major Nick Hill, Head of CCF, and supported by eight dedicated members of staff, provided an unforgettable experience of adventure and skill-building.
The cadets engaged in a variety of activities designed to challenge and develop their abilities. Among the highlights were stand up paddle boarding, climbing, mountain biking (including some all important puncture repair lessons!) and mastering field craft skills. The cadets also had the opportunity to shoot rifles on the range and try their hand at clay pigeon shooting. Leadership challenges and team-building exercises were integral parts of the camp, fostering a strong sense of camaraderie and cooperation and each night, the cadets enjoyed the unique experience of camping under canvas, adding to the sense of adventure.
St Lawrence College boasts a thriving CCF programme, with 135 students from Year 9 to Year 13 participating in weekly training sessions. “The CCF Summer Camp is a vital part of our training programme,” said Major Hill. “It offers the cadets a chance to apply what they’ve learned in a practical setting, develop new skills, and build lasting friendships. The enthusiasm and commitment of our cadets and staff make this event a highlight of the school year.”
As the camp concluded, the cadets returned home with a wealth of experiences and lifelong memories. The success of the camp continues to reflect the strength and vitality of the CCF programme at St Lawrence College, preparing young pupils for future challenges both within and beyond the school environment.
